IT Employment Growth Slows In May, Report Says
The IT industry added 5,500 jobs in May, according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report on Friday, June 2, 2017.
“The IT industry’s employment growth dropped slightly in May,” said Jay Rollins, owner of ITJobsWeb.com, a leading IT jobs website. “About 3,400 fewer jobs were gained in May, compared to the 8,900 total jobs added in April. Overall, the tech industry had losses in computer manufacturing and computer systems design to blame for slower numbers.”
Collectively, the four main sectors that form the IT industry now sit at 4,821,400 employed persons. “Over the last 12 months, the tech industry has increased by 129,000 jobs despite losses in the computer manufacturing sector,” said Rollins. The IT industry includes information from the Data Processing, Hosting and Related Services subsector, the Computer Electronic Product Manufacturing subsector, the Computer Systems Design and Related Services subsector, and the Management and Technical Consulting Services subsector.
For the second month in a row, the Management and Technical Consulting Services subsector accounted for the majority of jobs gained last month, with 6,400 jobs created in May and 7,900 jobs in April. Since May 2016, the sector has added 77,300 jobs and now sits at 1,438,900 employed persons.
Data Processing and Hosting added 1,00 jobs in May, compared to the 400 jobs lost in April. Over the past 12 months, the sector has added 2,400 jobs.
Once again, the Computer Electronic Manufacturing subsector experienced losses, eliminating 1,700 jobs in May after having already lost 600 jobs in April. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has lost 17,200 jobs.
Computer Systems Design and Related Services also suffered jobs losses last month, losing 200 jobs. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has added 64,800 jobs and now sits at 2,045,700 employed persons.
